Guardian Meta (Spoilers)

imjustlo:

Okay, but there was literally no way Yunlan and Shen Wei could have not fallen in love. They both ensured it. (Obv, I’m talking about the show here and not the book).

It’s not fate, that’s not what I mean. It’s the timeline. In the book it was reincarnation, but even then you could say Yunlan’s slutty personality is what ensured that he fell in love with Shen Wei, and Shen Wei ensured they’d meet at all by semi-stalking him for years. You’re bound to run into each other in that way.

But in the show, what triggered Shen Wei’s devotion to Kun Lun? Yunlan did. Because the moment he sees Shen Wei 10K years in the past, he decides to spend every moment they’re together aggressively flirting with him. He already knows what will get a reaction from the time he and Shen Wei have spent together in the present, so he’s not at a disadvantage here. He doesn’t need to learn Shen Wei’s temperament—he notices as soon as they meet that Shen Wei is practically the same person. So he teases, he gets a reaction, and he keeps teasing, keeps pushing that boundary, and Shen Wei is taken completely by surprise.

Yunlan is thinking: “my future husband is adorable.”

Shen Wei doesn’t stand a chance.

(Now I think we’re all pretty much in agreement over the fact that Yunlan should have spent at least a month or so with Shen Wei for Shen Wei to develop that amount of devotion; one night is a little… Well, he’d certainly be sad, but devoted? Nah. Not with Shen Wei’s personality.)

But Yunlan? What does he like? Attention. And boy does Shen Wei give his his fill from the moment they meet at the university. Shen Wei’s intensity is something anyone would be creeped out by, but our boy Yunlan can’t help but wonder where it comes from. It’s the cop in him; he needs to know the source of the behavior. And because of his suspicions, he spends more time with Shen Wei, so he gets more of that attention—and the fact that Shen Wei grows into basically his caretaker just eggs that on—so he enjoys their time together even more, so he starts to like Shen Wei’s personality past the intensity, they develop a chemistry, they fall in love, they get married.

Yunlan falls in love with Shen Wei over time like a normal romance, but he does so because Shen Wei is already in love with him. If Shen Wei hadn’t been, he wouldn’t have given Yunlan any more attention than he would give anyone else. They would have been acquaintances at most. Shen Wei hadn’t even bothered to show up as his Envoy self since Yunlan became the Guardian.

So in this way, Yunlan doesn’t stand a chance. He likes the attention too much.

And so when he gets dropped back 10K years in the past and he meets Shen Wei’s non-devoted self, his first instinct is to tease the fuck out of him and throw him off his equilibrium, which serves to awaken that devotion. But even at the time, his main concern is getting back to his Shen Wei, the one he practically lives with.

Shen Wei falls head over heels, and the cycle continues.

There was no chance of them not falling for one another because one of them was already in love the moment the other met them.

am i ever going to be free of this

lazulisong:

They only have one fight about it, but it’s a bad one: Zhao Yunlan actually goes to his mom’s house and sleeps three miserable nights in his childhood bed. It’s much too narrow, not to mention empty of anybody’s cool body close to his to cuddle up to. He wakes up three or four times a night, and Shen Wei’s never there, already awake or never asleep, watching him with fathomless black eyes, like he’s starving for the sight of him.

It’s too much. Zhao Yunlan wakes up and decides that today he’ll go home and apologize. He’ll say, Sorry, baby, I was a dick about it, I –

He opens his eyes, full of good intentions, but the first thing he sees is Shen Wei, in the actual flesh, sitting on the end of his childhood bed and staring at him with exhausted, ravenous eyes.

Zhao Yunlan yells and flails off the bed, and Shen Wei’s effort to catch him only ends with him tilting over as well, falling on top of Zhao Yunlan in slow motion, like a cartoon.

Shen Wei is very heavy. He looks like a nerd but he’s packed with solid fighter’s muscle. He catches himself before he crushes Zhao Yunlan entirely, but he’s still braced over him, eyes wide. “Are you –”

The door crashes open. “ARE YOU–” begins Zhao Yunlan’s mom, and stops.

Just to make things more awkward, Zhao Yunlan’s dad comes too. He looks at the scene, and then at his wife, and then says, with surprising calm, “I didn’t know you gave him a key.”

Zhao Yunlan hadn’t known that either, actually, but there’s no way to suggest Shen Wei had just ripped a hole in the fabric of reality like fucking Mickey Mouse and appeared without making things worse, so he just says, “Uhhhh–”

Zhao Yunlan’s mom goes, affectionately scolding, like she never fucking does with Zhao Yunlan. (Because Shen Wei is her favorite, fuck him.) “Xiao Wei, even if I gave you the key, what are you doing just sneaking in? I would have made your favorite breakfast!”

“MA,” howls Zhao Yunlan, in outrage. The past two days he’d been lucky to get a sniff from his mother and a bowl of specially-bought off-brand cold cereal slammed in front of him. Then he takes a deep breath in and says, “Ma, I’ll talk to him about it, so can you two–”

“Oh, all right,” says his mother huffily. “Properly make up, you two.”

The first time they met after the incident was on Monday morning.
By chance he arrived at the classroom at the same time Newwiee and his group showed up. Instead of the usual nod Newwiee gave him a soft smile, partially expressing his gratitude for what Tay had done for him on the weekend.

Suddenly what had happened started to feel real.

When he had returned to the dormitories the adrenaline had still been pumping through his veins. He had tried his best not to wake up Off and Gun who were splayed out on Off’s bed. Fully clothed he had sat down on his bed. Sleep just wouldn’t come to him, but his head had been empty. Caught in this trance he had stayed wide awake until the first rays of sunshine had shone through the window and he had passed out from exhaustion.
When he had come to it, it was late afternoon. The room had been empty and no noise came from the common room.  He had felt like he was hung-over, both his head and stomach had hurt. Disoriented he had sat up slowly only for it to get black in front of his eyes.
Off had sauntered into the room, holding his step, seemingly surprised to have found Tay somewhat awake.
“You look like shit Peng!” he had greeted him, eyeing him up and down. Off had taken another bite of the sandwich he was holding in his hand before he had pushed the rest of it into his face.
“Want some?”
Tay couldn’t say anything before his stomach started growling, so he had taken a few bites.

A strong slap to his shoulder took him out of his thoughts.

His first class on Monday was History of Magic. When he finally found the classroom on the first floor it was already cramped with students who tried to fit in between the towers of books that filled the whole room and made Tay feel claustrophobic just by looking at them.
He was expecting whispers and knowing glances when he entered the room.
What he didn’t expect was the head of a familiar Gryffindor student turning around and looking at him in surprise.

On the far right of the room, sitting amidst his Gryffindor friends was New.
Their eyes met and Tay was about to head to the free seat next to him, when New’s face changed into a more reserved expression and the group surrounding him started to whisper.
“I didn’t know you knew the Suan guy, Newwiee” “Are your families close?”… After leaving him to stand awkwardly in the middle of the room, New finally seemed to have made up his mind and waved him over. All eyes followed him.

“I think you are in the wrong class.” He said softly.
“Huh?” Tay adjusted his glasses.
“This is History of Magic, for fourth years.”
Tay sighed in relief.
“Ah, I know. The school decided to put me into fourth grade.”
New looked surprised for a moment before he nodded and cleared the space beside him.

part 1: how it started (1.7k)

for @sluttynewwiee

read on ao3 (part 2 3.1)

Tay lingered in front of the door to the great hall. The warm light finding it’s way between the door gap beckoned him to step in, but he stayed in the dark of the entrance hall, pondering whether he should go back to the common room.

During the train ride he had kept to himself letting the chatter of the four girls sitting in the same train compartment wash over him, his eyes focused on the book in his lap. In the beginning he could feel their curious glances, but as the ride went on they got distracted by stories about their summer holidays and didn’t engage with him until they arrived at Hogsmeade station.

He tried to blend in and look like he knew the way to the carriages that would take the students to the castle. Ducking his head and with his eyes on his feet he followed the crowd. The ground got moist and soft as the path vanished between tall spruce trees and he unconsciously started to lag behind as he took  in his surroundings. When he saw the first Thestral he almost felt relieved. Reading up on Hogwarts and it’s history and customs might have actually payed of. He climbed onto the last available carriage just as it was about to leave and sat down at the outermost corner, trying not to look up. The three guys on the carriage were chatting loudly and talking over each other and didn’t seem to take any notice of him. Tay took a quick glance at their robes. One Gryffindor, one Hufflepuff and one Slytherin. He had heard a lot about the comradery at Hogwarts, but also the rivalry between the four houses so these three were a colorful combination indeed. Tay turned his head to look back at the path they came from. The sun started to vanish behind the forest, making it look like the tree tops were lit on fire, an orange glow embracing them from above. Finally he felt himself relax, even as the air grew colder underneath the trees. The chatter had died down and the sigh that escaped Tay was louder than he had intended to.

Okay some more thoughts on how to fix the time travel plot for Guardian!

1) We know that no matter how much time has passed, it isn’t an indication of how fast time is moving in the time they came from, so they could have taken a month or two to get back, it would’ve been fine. For the purposes of fucking Shen Wei up so hard he pines for 10K years (even if most of it is in nap form), let’s give them 6 months. So that’s six months to build a relationship

2) I have no clue how the show would have done it platonically, but Shen Wei and Yunlan would have to build a romance. That’s literally the only type of relationship that would justify that acting from Zhou Yilong, and he fucking knows it. We can even keep that Yunlan and Shen Wei weren’t even a couple yet when Yunlan entered the time portal, they were just going around calling each other “good friends” and practically living together, cuz let’s say Yunlan is an idiot or in denial or what have you. But either way, Yunlan is unaware they were lovers in the past

2a) This works great cuz it’s Yunlan, and to him Shen Wei has always been intensely interested in him, so he doesn’t really notice that his flirting is making Shen Wei fall head over heels for this stranger who knows all the right things to say to knock him off his equilibrium

2b) Because of that, he’s surprised when Shen Wei blushingly confesses to him, or says something like “I know what you want from me, and I want it too, but humans and mutants can never be together. I must turn you down” and Yunlan just has this moment of “huh, I guess to anyone that isn’t a pining, celibate immortal with too many emotional walls up, I look in love”, which triggers the next moment of “oh shit he’s in love with me”, which spawns “oh shit I’m in love with him”

2c) Yunlan struggles for a bit, not wanting to “take advantage” of his younger (I’m assuming in his early 20s; Shen Wei needed the time to get through undergrad, graduate, and post doc, as well as develop that slick sense of style after waking up practically the same age 10K years later) “good friend”, but fuck is he cute. Reminds him of when he met Shen Wei at the university, but with less heartbreak weighing him down, and maybe he slips up and lets his hand linger over Shen Wei’s when they both reach for the same thing, or gazes at him a little too softly while they’re discussing battle tactics with 5 other generals, and gods, he misses Shen Wei so much, his Shen Wei, the one who has already waited, and Yunlan wants nothing more than to return to him and end the wait

2d) when the time comes, before they open the portal, Yunlan sees the devastation on Shen Wei’s face. He had no clue Yunlan would be leaving after this. Yunlan can’t help himself, knows he’s dooming this man to 10K years of yearning, but he can’t stand that look, and he kisses him. Shen Wei kisses back and it’s sloppy and inexperienced and errs on the side of desperate, but Yunlan pours all the “sorrys” he possibly can into it, sorry for doing this to you, sorry for wanting the later you, sorry for never realizing, sorry for what’s to come

3) give Yunlan a “tragic” ending for younger!Shen Wei to witness. the terrible emotions behind that “this is the life I’m returning to you” delivery by Yilong just falls flat if it’s for his comrades and people he’s heard Kun Lun has saved. It speaks of a tragedy Shen Wei has been living with the trauma of for centuries (er, decades, if we go with that nap they said he took). Yunlan would have been sucked into a portal, sure, but what they gave us wasn’t traumatizing enough for Shen Wei to be so protective of him that he doesn’t want him leaving the city or facing mutants without him there to back him up. That protectiveness isn’t just cute; it’s obsessive. It has to come from that trauma, a trauma regarding some tragic fate that had to do with Yunlan being helpless to defend himself in some situation

4) Shen Wei can’t be “waiting”. It would be so much better if he had no idea Yunlan was going to show up later. Maybe he’s hoping for a reincarnation, or he’s hoping that once he dies, he can join Yunlan in the afterlife, but Shen Wei is just doing his job, enjoying the surface now that he’s awake because the light reminds him of his time with Kun Lun, and then he sees Yunlan at the university and time. Stops. His heart nearly follows suit. He doesn’t know what he’s feeling or if he’s even feeling anything, just that the love of his life is for some reason living and breathing right before his eyes. And he doesn’t seem to recognize him at all. But that chemistry still remains

5) This would have a subplot of Shen Wei trying to figure out what exactly happened and whether it was reincarnation or something else, maybe suddenly remember that Kun Lun had been wearing some strange clothing the first time they met, he’d just forgotten in his grief over the years. Tiny details don’t stick around for long

6) Also, in those first few episodes, Yunlan follows Shen Wei around because of suspicion, but Shen Wei also reveals he knows a lot about Dixing to Yunlan in the first episode, which would make more sense if Shen Wei needs to get close to Yunlan in order to understand what he was doing 10K years in the past, so that’s why he’s investigating him and also investigating what the fuck happened 10K years ago

7) Also also, the moment they got back to the present from the time dimension they were in, Yunlan would kiss Shen Wei immediately, right in front of Da Qing, and this time it would be experienced and right and make all the sense in the world, and it would take Shen Wei everything to not crumble under the weight of his elation

7a) “I’m so sorry,” Yunlan would say against his mouth, moving him back into the edge of a gurney, “so so sorry I put you through this, made you wait so long,” and Shen Wei would respond with tears in his eyes that he’d do it a thousand times over if it meant sharing this just one more time

7b) “guys” Da Qing says weakly from the background

Can couldn’t believe it when he realized that Tin could be very careless sometimes. It was weird discovering the fact that his rich, handsome, perfect boyfriend wasn’t so perfect after all. Of course Can knew Tin wasn’t flawless, but it seemed a little out of character for him to be so careless.

The first time it happened, Tin had to make a u-turn to retrieve his house keys. If he hadn’t returned home right that moment, Can already had in mind to drop by his office to hand him the keys.

The second time it happened, Can wasn’t sure if Tin really was that forgetful or if he was simply careless. Tin was one foot out the door when Can had to rush from the kitchen just to give him his lunch box that he’d left on the dining table.

“You really didn’t see this bright as hell plastic container on the dining table?” Can asked, frowning. Tin shook his head, but smiled as he took the lunch box from Can’s head. Can couldn’t even muster the energy to be annoyed now that he saw that smile. “You’re so careless.”

“Thank you for this. Love you, Cantaloupe,” Tin said, leaning down to press a gentle kiss on Can’s forehead. “I’ll see you after work, okay? Take care. Don’t strain yourself too hard.”

Can rolled his eyes, despite the fluttery feeling in his stomach. “I know. Now go.”

Can would’ve smiled at the memory if he didn’t feel like knocking Tin on the head right this moment. Tin had left his car keys on the coffee table, and he was already on the way to the elevator. Sighing, Can quickly locked the apartment up before rushing to meet Tin.

“You forgot something,” Can said, trying his hardest not to pant. He was a fitness coach, dammit! Tin looked up from his phone in surprise, before breaking out into the kind of smile that could turn Can’s insides gooey.

Before Can could even open his mouth, Tin gently pulled him by the neck and brought him into a kiss, effectively turning Can’s brain to mush. Tin tilted his head, pressing deeper into the kiss, their noses brushing together. Can couldn’t control the soft, surprised moan leaving his lips, his fingers finding purchase in the strands of Tin’s hair, tugging his boyfriend impossibly closer.

Tin started to lean down even more, a habit he developed ever since they got together. Can didn’t know whether to feel insulted by the height difference or weak at the knees at Tin’s considerate action.

Can was startled back to reality by the sudden moan against his wet lips, but Tin wouldn’t let him go even when he tried pulling his head away.

Cantaloupe,” Tin whined, chasing after his lips, and Can tried his hardest to push down the urge to mess Tin up even more. They both had work in the morning and he was 90% sure Tin was already late. Never mind the fact that he was the son of the owner of the company, Can wasn’t a fan of someone abusing his power like that, and Tin knew.

“I said you forgot something,” Can reminded, Tin’s car keys almost forgotten in his pocket.

“You meant the kiss, right? I forgot to give you your goodbye kiss today,” Tin said, and Can wished he had more time to savour the endearing half-dazed look on Tin’s handsome face.

“I meant your car keys, but thanks.” Can hoped he wasn’t blushing, but the soft look in Tin’s eyes signalled otherwise.

“Here,” Can handed the keys to Tin’s open palm, “You’re so forgetful, Ai Tin.”

“Thank God I have you to remind me everyday then, right?”

Can really didn’t think his cheeks would survive if Tin kept saying things like that, and it had already been years since they got together. Embarrassed yet slightly warmed by Tin’s answer, Can pushed him into the elevator, not even bothering to address Tin’s knowing smirk.
