This Blog Is Unrepentantly Pro- AO3!

This blogger remembers when we didn’t have AO3.

This blogger remembers when we had to put disclaimers at the head of our fics and pray that someone didn’t take it into their heads to sue us for what we created.

This blogger remembers brilliant artists and writers getting decades of work obliterated on LJ because someone who wanted to tell people what they were allowed to create went running to someone who wanted a profit, and told them the artists and writers had been naughty.

This blogger remembers just how hard the creators of AO3 worked to build the thing we all seem to take for granted now.

This blogger watched friends dive into the creation process so heartily and determinedly that they all but disappeared from the writing/gaming/artistic side of their fandom for YEARS while they worked to make the archive happen.

This blogger remembers the sense of giddy wonder that there would possibly be LAWYERS involved, willing to defend our right to create these works, and not leave us hanging at the mercy of corporate legal teams.

This blogger is aware that she reads between twenty to fifty books’ worth of material every year on AO3, and is never REQUIRED to pay a penny for the privilege of getting access.

This blogger is aware that she will not ever see advertisements on AO3, and that her personal data and reading preferences won’t be sold to advertisers in order to raise the money that AO3 needs to pay for the services they provide.

This blogger is aware that AO3 is, and has always been, a labor of love; by fans, for fans, and not for profiting off fans – and this is what makes it unique in the whole of the media universe.

This blogger has NEVER taken AO3 for granted, and has ALWAYS been damned glad to have access to it.  Even in years when this blogger didn’t have the means to support it financially.

Same.

Also this blogger here.

Sometimes all of my good fortune makes me wonder whether I’m actually appreciating it enough. And if I’m honest, I have to admit that no, I’m not sure I am. Which then makes me think that there must be some flaw in my personality on my brain chemistry, which means I just have to get used to the fact that no matter what happens, I’m never going to be a person who can ever just… be happy.

So, I have some meta about Ms. Octavia Spencer being prominent in this dystopian sci-fi film.

…This black woman who isn’t skinny, young, light, or what Hollywood would ever consider even cast-worthy as the prominent leading lady on the “good guys” side, got her own character posters and is a huge plot motivation for the film.  She got to be active, smart, loving, and amazing.  Which of course happened because this wasn’t made in Hollywood.

Snowpiercer was made in South Korea.

At a screening of an older film of his (Mother also good!), the filmmaker specifically said he wasn’t  interested in making a Hollywood movie *precisely because* they are obsessed with casting a certain type and he valued talent over that.  In South Korea, he could keep his artistic freedom.  …That’s Boon-Jong Ho, BTW who first got on the world’s radar with The Host.

When asked which American actors he wanted to work with most, he answered Viola Davis (this was before The Help) and Toni Collette, two talented women.

Considering the roles Octavia tends to play in Hollywood, I am #1 glad she got to play this and #2 annoyed that I don’t get to see more people like her in these genre roles.

…I’m also glad that at least one movie squashes the notion that only skinny, young, Hollywood-”sexy” people would ever have any say or relevance in these scenarios.

It’s (Birthday) Tradition

Pairing: TinCan
Based off my head canon about how Tin and Can celebrate their birthdays. Could sort of fit into Love is a disaster series, but I’m not sure I want it there yet.

Also I wrote this because in approx. 3.5 hrs, it will be my birthday so I wanted Tin and Can to celebrate their birthdays with me.

Summary:
Everyone has their favorite ways of spending or celebrating their birthday. Tin and Can have special ways they celebrate for themselves and each other.
