This scene was amazing. Bai Yu Tong and Zhan Yao had a family dinner at the Bai villa that Zhan Yao’s father also attended. And then his dad started tearing into him right there, at the table, in front of everybody, and the Bai family didn’t know what to do, where to look, because it was so awkward.
But Yu Tong’s reaction was the best. When Old Zhan mentioned his son’s canceled trip to the US, Yu Tong immediately knew where this was headed. The way he slowly looked up, chewing just as slowly, and then he changed the topic as quickly as possible. Because he knew how much this was hurting Zhan Yao, even though Zhan Yao didn’t let anyone see. But Yu Tong remembered that just a few days ago, Zhan Yao confessed to him how much he envied Yu Tong his dad, a good father…
I really love how attuned these two are to the other’s moods and needs. And also the fact that they actually talk about their issues, like adults.
I went through the unsubbed episodes of SCI – yes, I’m impatient, so sue me! – and I LOVE how the whole thing with Zhan Yao & Zhao Jue progresses through the season, especially since we get to see it from Bai Yu Tong’s POV. I love that Bai Yu Tong is always there, seeing it happening, sensing when Zhan Yao’s not telling him things…
In ep 11, when their suspect committed suicide after Zhan Yao hypnotized him and Yu Tong got all angry at Zhan Yao, claiming he reminded him of Zhao Jue? Zhan Yao was horrified. But come ep 21, Zhan Yao does something he’s never done before, and so very callously too, and Yu Tong sees it…
…and he grabs Zhan Yao’s arm and tells him, “You know who you just reminded me of?!” and Zhan Yao answers, “Zhao Jue?” with such a whatever-attitude. And Bai Yu Tong hates it! He hates it so much. And he’s so scared of where this thing with Zhan Yao & Zhao Jue is headed
yet he feels so powerless to stop it…
Gosh, I really hope that there IS S2 where they explore this further because it’s such a fascinating subject, especially seen from Yu Tong’s POV. Zhan Yao is a genius and Yu Tong knows he can’t stop him from doing anything he wants, not really. All he can do is be there for him, be his moral rock, and hope it’s enough.
I live for these domestic scenes. And also, I love that Bai Yu Tong was ordered to move in with Zhan Yao at first, for protection and stuff, but he kind of, sort of forgot to move out again at some point? XD
Ah, now that’s a tough one. But I would say episode 5. Not only did we get Zhao Yan looking exceptionally good in that episode…
… Zhao Jue escaped and we got this wonderful scene in his cell when Zhan Yao noticed the pattern within the pattern and his brain went haywire…
… then we got the scene with Zhao Yan, Zhan Jue and the professor on the boat where Zhan Jue was so very creepily proud of Zhao Yan’s ability to make highly intelligent people still feel like idiots…
… and then, of course, the cherry on top, the PCR scene with Bai Yu Tong and Zhan Yao where Yu Tong had to save Zhan Yao’s life – while cursing him to high heaven for being a fool because he was so scared that Zhan Yao might actually die on him!
So yes, this episode was chock-full of exactly the kind of things that I love and adore. Just incredible ♥♥♥

this definitely is one of the most beautiful episodes of this show! (at least so far) funny how a lot of people in this fandom say, this is their favourite episode. but honestly? It has everything! Psychology, badassery, Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao fighting side by side, drama, near death…
choosing a favourite scene is nearly impossible!
all those scenes we get between Zhan Yao and Zhao Jue! I’m excited what the show has in stock for us regarding that area specificially.
oh and ep 5 also gives us them both fighting off those thugs! Loved that one, too!
and the part at the haven?! it shows so much of their dynamic already! they are both so worried! and the letter? I have some ideas about that, too (also the interview regarding it)
and on the boat? how Zhan Yao outsmarts them? I hate to admit but Zhao Jue and I shared the same expression here, haha. I was also weirdly proud of our boy
so, episode 5 in total is my favourite episode because it covers so many things I love
in addition to that, I have some other favourite scenes, but in total they can’t compete with the whole episode 5.
Just from the top of my head: – when they talk under the tree about killing etc – ep 7 when they talk with Bai Chi and their fathers talking outside, how Zhan Yao will be okay as long as he’s got Bai Yutong by his side! – the whole situation with the mouse pj.. oh god, I almost died at that one!
But there are so many more beautiful scenes! It’s hard to decide
