Tin’s Hobbies

Okay so. I was thinking. We as a fandom have pretty much collectively decided Tin is a dedicated student who doesn’t necessarily want to go into his family’s business but is determined to do his best anyways. But what does he want to do? We know Ae and Can are athletes in their spare time and Can also plays video games. We know Pete writes in a journal and is a bit crafty but what does Tin do? What does he like?

So I was thinking about this and I have decided. Tin spends an inordinate amount of time alone and it can’t all be studying so what do 18~ year olds do when they’re alone? Media and the internet is what. He was a major book worm as a kid as well as a movie lover who, when he was old enough (Still probably too young since he had no proper adult supervision) took to the internet.

He spends time on tumblr, weibo, etc. because these aren’t people who know him as a person so honesty comes easier. Talking about the latest book he read or TV series he finished to usernames he recognizes is cathartic after he loses all most all his real life “friends”.

I say that if Tin had his way he’d probably major in literature or media because these are things he has loved all his life. Because he was alone but books and movies and tv shows meant other worlds to get lost in and the internet meant anonymously sharing these worlds with people who loved them as much as he did. There he feels less alone in the world for a little while because there he doesn’t have to hide the things he loves for fear of Tul taking them away (sidenote I have a headcanon that every time Tin expressed a love for something, a toy, a book, a person, Tul would find a way to make sure it vanished. Tin caught on that when he loved something it was taken away so he learned to love quietly. Until Can and well…he saw how well that turned out. Maybe it was something wrong with him? Why else would everything he cared about leave?).

This got way too long but I just need a Tin with hobbies and passions okay? All I’ve seen is that he’s a workaholic student but everyone has interests! @andwebegin @florbexter @weilongfu thoughts?

We also have to take into account that Tin spent part of his formative years in England and despite the way it had ended he refuses to let Tul destroy the happy memories he made there. I always pictured him as anglophil and that he enjoys foreign books and movies, maybe even some european ones.

Ditto on him being a smart alec and book nerd but I always thought that since he’s a logical and straightforward thinking kind of guy who has no tolerance for activities that don’t provide some kind of benefit to him, his hobbies will mirror that. He hates his family so he will avoid real estate and wants to excel in something that his family is not well-known as.
I imagine him dabbling in stock and financial markets during his spare time.

Until Can shows him that having hobbies don’t mean you need to gain something tangible.

Tin with stocks and financial markets as a hobby? YAAAASSS.

Tin the closet media nerd? Keeping one thing pleasurable and enjoyable deep in his chest so that Tul can’t steal it? YAASSSSS.

GUYS WHY NOT BOTH.

Tin plays stocks in his spare time around family. He learned his lesson when his favorite novels would disappear and there would be charred pages in the fireplace the next morning. Or he’d find music tapes and movies smashed after playing them on his speakers in his room. The only safe place for movies was the home theater where technically anyone could have watched anything, but the space is too big and lonely for Tin. 

Instead all Tul and his father see are spreadsheets and graphs tracking growth and projections before Tin invests. Tin enjoys it, it’s like a puzzle game of sorts, but with higher stakes. It challenges his mind and intuition which is why he picked it up. And if Tul thinks he can tank an entire company to spite Tin, well, that’s how Tul chooses to spend his money and really, Tin sold all his stock in them two months ago at the peak of their gains and has only been tracking them to see if he should get back in. 

If the smaller companies Tin invests in are also involved in film and TV… His family doesn’t have to know about those funds either.

But when he’s alone? When he knows no one is home or when he’s at Can’s? Tin reads novels on apps on his phone. Or he queues up movies and TV shows when studying.

Can falls a little deeper in love that day when Tin brings some classic Western horror movies and they have a history of Western horror marathon. Can learns so much about Tin that night as Tin talks the most he’s ever talked. It’s like Tin can’t stop himself, so excited to share this part of his life finally. He rambles about cinematography, about atmosphere, special effects, and his favorite lines. 

He even, in a rare slip, shows Can his super secret film blog which Tin finds time to update once a week. Can looks at Tin in wonder, speechless. But Tin only sees his vocal boyfriend suddenly go quiet. 

Before he can backtrack, Can puts a hand over Tin’s to stop him from closing the page and kisses Tin softly. Can smiles and stroke’s Tin’s hair and Tin leans into it.

“No, don’t close it. Tell me more.”

They stay up that weekend, laying in Can’s bed with the lights off as Tin explains something from another movie they didn’t get to. But Can can see the pictures Tin traces out with his hands. Tin’s eyes sparkle, his smile is genuine and infectious. 

Can wonders just how different things could have been if Tin had been allowed to indulge in his passions freely instead of in secret. But he doesn’t mind keeping this small piece of Tin to himself among all the others, a treasure all his own to rival Tin’s wealth.
